I’m putting it all out there: Kanye West isn’t a great fashion designer. That’s fine, considering Kanye is one of the best musicians this century has seen—not being a master of fabrics and cuts isn’t a big deal. Now, most Kanye West fans are in it for the music, but over the last few years, his clothes have entered the equation, so here we are.
Today Kanye released his sixth Yeezy Season collaboration with Adidas though an extensive look book featuring Kim Kardashian-West, his wife and brilliant businesswoman. The initial reaction to West’s fashion line by critics was fairly harsh: It was dismissed by noted fashion critics Cathy Horyn and Robin Givhans for it’s lack of innovation. Season 4, launched in an outdoor showcase that took place at Roosevelt Island in New York City, faired a bit better. Unfortunately Season 6 looks like a regression to his original faux-military attire mixed with athleisure. It’s kind of...rote?
Though Season 6 is here to buy, West’s best work remains his tour merchandise of the last few years. The heavy metal-inspired Yeezus merch set off a wave of faux-rockstar stylings across rap and streetwear. Soon after, his Life of Pablo shirts became a go to status symbol of cool. Even though one can spend hundreds of dollars on a Yeezy Season 6 shirt, his less exclusive tour merch remains the best way to show one’s West fandom. You can trust me.
