This Moneybagg Yo and Youngboy NBA Track Is the Power of Working Class Southern Rap

Over the last month, Moneybagg Yo and Youngboy NBA, two up-and-coming southern rappers, could be found on Instagram posting stories of their studio time together. Today, the duo released the collaborative album Fed Baby’s. Sure, they could use a copy editor, but the record shows that there is still a place for no-nonsense street rap.

Memphis, Tennessee’s Moneybagg Yo was discovered by Yo Gotti and approaches street rap with a surprisingly overexposed heart. He may lean on trap cliches (“My money blue so you know Ben on all the face / I got them choppers, them dracos, no three-eighties”); but he’s at his best when detailing relationships and putting to words the way social media complicates inherently messy matters.

That particularly modern emotional vulnerability is also at the core of the teenaged Youngboy NBA, who rose to fame last year after being connected to drive-by shooting. The Baton Rouge, LA rapper is often compared to the likes of Lil Boosie or Kevin Gates, but like Moneybagg, he details relationship hardships while chronicling the harshness of his Louisiana hometown.

“Preliminary Hearing,” an early stand out from Fed Baby’s, has them bouncing between verses and weaving in singing to make for an uptempo jam. I must also give credit to Youngboy for the line: “I’m out the north / straight up the from gutter / like some turtles.” Not everyday that a rapper will namedrop my favorite cold-blooded creature.
