Stop Asking 'Who Is BTS?' & Embrace Our New Boy Band Overlords

Last night the 2017 American Music Awards took place in Los Angeles, California. The ineffable Tracee Ellis Ross hosted, Diana Ross was given the Lifetime Achievement Award, Kelly Roland mispronounced former One Directioner Niall Horan’s first name, Christina Aguilera covered Whitney Houston and Taylor Swift managed to stay home. It was an all around pretty pleasant time, made memorable by K-Pop all stars BTS. The group—Jin, J-Hope, RM (formerly Rap Monster), Suga, Jimin, V and Jungkook—performed, making their U.S. televised debut with their latest single, “DNA.” Check it out above.

As the western pop world finally opens it’s ears to the saccharine glory of manufactured Korean pop, we here at TrackRecord are happy to have a new group fill the One Direction-shaped void in our collective hearts. Plus, these guys can really dance, and who knew the world was ready for choreography? So long to the days of listless-yet-endearing flopping around on stage.

And to those who continue to ask “Who is BTS?” we say the joke is old, and meet your new boy band overlords. They aren’t going anywhere.

Senior Writer, Jezebel. My debut book, LARGER THAN LIFE: A History of Boy Bands, is out now.
