I am sick of hearing “Ignition (Remix).” The song, once the subject of a dumb petition to make it the U.S. national anthem, should have fallen out of favor years ago, along with the rest of R. Kelly’s work. We’ve known about and dismissed allegations of sexual assault and abuse against Kelly for almost 20 years when Jim Derogatis first started investigating the R&B singer. But given Derogatis’ bombshell report, published in BuzzFeed earlier this year about Kelly’s alleged imprisonment of women, it should finally be time to retire this man’s catalogue—and take the stories of these women seriously.
Apparently Kelly’s “Ignition (Remix)” is still popular, popular enough to be covered in the upcoming Pitch Perfect installment, Pitch Perfect 3. In the teaser below, the series’ a cappella group the Bellas sing a few lines from the 2003 song in an impromptu medley of pop songs, as Jezebel’s Madeleine Davies pointed out on Twitter earlier today.
I don’t know who thought this was a good idea, but there’s really no excuse for including it. Make the Bellas cover a Britney Spears song instead. Or Usher. Or Alicia Keys or Christina Aguilera or whoever you want, really, just let R. Kelly go. Pitch Perfect 3 hits theaters on December 22, so I would guess there’s not a lot of time to cut the scene, but then again, crazier things have happened.
