Skincare is all the rage lately—face masks! Serums! Other stuff! But if you’ve suffered from acne for years, the latest craze might be a little rage-inducing, especially if people interpret your ongoing journey towards clearer skin as you asking them for their opinion. (God forbid.)
Lorde can relate. The 21-year-old New Zealand pop star recently made an Instagram story while she was bathing her face in blue and red light—an at-home treatment for acne. “For real though, acne sucks,” she tells the camera before issuing a dramatic eye-roll. “Know what also sucks? When you’ve had acne for years and years and years and years and done all the drugs, tried all the things, and people are still like, ‘You know what worked for me is MOISTURIZING!’” (Italics and all-caps, my own.)
Lorde also says that some people just think she’s “just dirty.” “‘Do you wash your face?’ It’s like, yes, I wash my face! I’m just genetically cursed!”
All the essential skincare pro-tips that people have been sharing lately are great—unless your skin and/or acne situation is so persistent or severe that you need to seek the advice of medical professionals. (Shout out dermatologists, you the real MVPs.) Then, what works to “brighten” or “liven” or “[insert another hard-to-measure verb here]” other people’s skin probably isn’t going to be the same miracle-worker for you, and that’s FINE. Finding the right skincare routine for you is just that—something you should do for you, and not everyone’s input will necessarily end up being valuable.
“For everyone out there who’s got bad skin—and actual bad skin, not just the kind of bad skin you can just use a fancy cream for a few days and it will get better—I feel your pain,” Lorde, ever a voice of wisdom, adds. “We’ll get there—we will. I promise.”
I love her! She’s the best. Watch a compilation of her IG story below.
