What were you doing when Kylie Jenner announced the birth of her baby girl (with rapper Travis Scott) on Sunday?
I, like millions of other people, stopped what I was doing to watch an 11-minute YouTube video titled “To Our Daughter” that the youngest of the Kardashian-Jenner clan shared, confirming months of speculation that the 20-year-old makeup mogul was, in fact, pregnant. And the baby is here!
The video is a lovely tribute to her relationship with Scott and really serves to showcase the love of her friends and family, but I’m left wondering: How did no one blather about this? For the last year the couple has been constantly filmed, at home and at his Scott’s concerts. Kylie has been involved in numerous photoshoots, collaborating with plenty of other famous people, who we can assume are also constantly filmed—yet none of this leaked. Not that privacy can’t exist, but it kind of can’t exist, at least for Kylie—so much of her brand is about accessibility and sharing everything about her life with the public. Hiding a pregnancy? That is nuts for anyone, but Jenner especially.
Throughout the last nine months, Kylie was uncharacteristically distant from the internet. What is Snapchat without Kylie? What is Instagram without the constant promotion of her own clothing brand and lip kit line? At least we now know it was just a phase, she’s alive, and gave birth to a human child who is also alive.
The only question left is: When will she return to her social media empire?
