Have you noticed celebrities are wearing super small sunglasses these days, leaving behind the ginormous, bug-eyed frames of the past (well, like the recent past, like the early 2000s)? It’s cool if you haven’t, because Kanye West sure has, and he’s onboard—so much so, that his wife Kim Kardashian West says he sent her an email urging her to chuck her tired old, too-big frames in the garbage.
Kim disclosed as much in last Sunday’s episode of the show that launched her family to fame, Keeping Up With the Kardashians, as New York Mag’s the Cut reports. She told sister Kourtney and BFF/self-proclaimed Food God Jonathan Cheban that Kanye “sent me a whole email like, ‘You cannot wear big glasses anymore. It’s all about tiny little glasses.’”
Let’s ignore the fact that Kanye sends Kim trend reports—which is not that shocking, considering how he completely redid her wardrobe in 2012. Let’s focus, instead, on tiny sunglasses, which are definitely in, and big sunglasses, which are definitely out. Tiny eyewear has been cool for a minute, which you would know if you’re the kind of person who follows what supermodels Gigi Hadid and Kardashian sister Kendall Jenner wear day-to-day. They look kind of nerdy, but I think that’s the point, that they’re so uncool that they make YOU look really cool and bold and daring?
It should be noted that Kanye was influential in making BIG glasses a thing, back in 2007, when he appeared in the music video for his hit “Stronger” wearing seriously impractical sunglasses. They looked kind of like when you half-open your window blinds to let just a liiittle light in, or stutter shades, as they were called. But those have been left far behind, in the age of MySpace and making duck faces in photos. Like big sunglasses, so too will tiny sunglasses one day be forgotten to time. Enjoy your moment, little frames! It won’t last.
