In September of this year, Pitchfork published a lengthy report detailing a series of accusations filed against rapper XXXTentacion by his ex-girlfriend, describing a harrowing pattern of physical and mental abuse. Last year, in October 2016, XXXTentacion was charged with aggravated battery of a pregnant woman, domestic battery by strangulation, false imprisonment, and witness-tampering. You can read the details here, but do so cautiously—they are disturbing.
In the midst of those charges, XXXTentacion reportedly signed a $6 million deal with Capitol Records. It was never confirmed, but that did not stop the young rapper from posting an Instagram story claiming he “terminated” said deal. At the end of October, he shared on Instagram, again, that he was quitting music. He hasn’t released anything new since, but clearly XXXTentacion’s social media accounts are not reliable sources for XXXTentacion news.
Regardless of the ongoing investigation, XXL reports (if we can even call it that) XXXTentacion will host an anti-rape event at Art Basel in Miami next month, news via another Instagram story. At the time of publishing, his Insta was wiped clean of all posts.
The rapper allegedly posted a video on Instagram and then immediately deleted it. He says:
“At Art Basel...I will be hosting an anti-rape event where basically rape victims can come to this event and tell their stories and help others, and support others who have been through a similar instance. It’ll be this December. I’d ask that if you come to the event you come bearing no type of negative energy and you make sure you come with the full support in your heart to those that have experienced any sort of post-traumatic experience or event. I ask that you be understanding.”
It cuts once, as if edited. You can watch a fan’s report of the clip below.
A few weeks prior, XXXTentacion pledged to donate $100,000 to domestic violence prevention programs via Instagram story. There’s no record of wether or not that actually happened.
For someone who is in the middle of a trial involving imprisonment of his ex-girlfriend, grotesque violence and total disregard for human life, these presumably false promises are beyond tone-deaf. It is dangerous to victims, it serves to marginalize the work of real volunteers and workers in domestic violence prevention programs, and it undermines necessary processes of restorative justice.
Is XXXTentacion hosting an anti-rape event? Probably not, but perhaps he’s fooled a few fans.
We reached out to a representative for XXXTentacion and are awaiting comment. We will update accordingly.
