Since “Bodak Yellow” swept the nation, became the song of
the summer 2017, and sent everyone into a trap-fueled frenzy, it’s become clear that Cardi B wasn’t asking a rhetorical question when she rapped “What bitch working as hard as me?” on her first major hit. The Bronx-born regular smegular girl has appeared on several tracks since then—“Kamasutra” with Juicy J, “Um Yea” with Offset, “Motorsport” with Migos and Nicki Minaj, and Ozuna’s “La Modelo”—but before today, she hadn’t released another song in which she’s the lead artist since the Grammy-nominated “Bodak”. That has changed: today, Cardi dropped her new song “Bartier Cardi,” featuring 21 Savage.
Cardi shows off her lightning-fast rapping abilities on the track, talking down to anyone who thinks they can compete with her, and 21 provides a nice counterweight to her sped-up style on his guest verse. It’s not “Bodak,” but that’s an unfair comparison (it would be tough for anyone to top the success of that song, just six months out from its release) and either way, it’s clear that Cardi isn’t taking it easy by simply enjoying the fruits of her labor so far. She is really working, and won’t stop until she gets to her next target. Respect.
