5 Seconds of Summer Went Full-on "Hotline Bling," Man

On Tuesday, March 27, 5 Seconds of Summer, the Australian quartet who recently pivoted hard from pop-punk/boy band hybrid to, like, pop-rock capital-a Adults with their latest single, “Want You Back,” their first new track in over 800 days, released a Drake-worshipping video for the song. Okay, maybe that’s a tad on the dramatic side, but the visual is well-within the wheelhouse of “Hotline Bling,” rotating room and all—and it’s like, guys, don’t do what Drizzy already done did!

I’m biased—I used to adore 5SOS as a band I thought would revolutionize the pop-punk/boy band space, making it a more accessible and celebratory place for the young female fans that occupy it, but this hard move towards, like, generic radio pop makes that seem like a distant dream. Maybe it isn’t? Maybe I’m still being a tad on the dramatic side? I realize shouting “I miss the old stuff,” into the void is a very lame and very gross practice, but this vid—and this song—makes me miss the old stuff.

Anyway, the video isn’t bad by any means—it’s just impossible to watch without getting some serious Drake vibes. For what it’s worth, 5 Seconds of Summer—Luke Hemmings, Michael Clifford, Calum Hood and Ashton Irwin—all look pretty cool in the thing, so, there’s that. I’ll buy what they’re selling, but I won’t be too happy about it, you know?

Watch the video for “Want You Back” above.
