I was minding my own business, when this afternoon I received a press release email with actual news. The email informed me that the rapper NF, with his album Perception, went to No. 1 on the Billboard Top 200 chart, beating out the likes of Lil Pump, Lil Uzi Vert, Tom Petty, and Trippie Redd. Now, of course, not be rude, but upon seeing the email, my first thought was: Who the fuck is NF?

I know he’s a Christian rapper and that his song “Let You Down” sounds a bit like “Love The Way You Lie”-era Eminem, which you could take as a compliment, considering the success of that song, but it was also horrible and a stain on Rihanna’s career, so this comparison isn’t a compliment.

The rest of his album, Perception, is the kind of overly melodramatic emo-rap that is sure to satisfy fans from who are too young to remember Linkin Park/Fort Minor, but who enjoyed the last Twenty One Pilots album. The other immediate reference point is fellow Christian rapper Lacrae. Except that, where NF’s album lacks any mainstream concessions, Lacrae attempted to go mainstream on his most recent single “Blessings,” with a Ty$ feature. I’m probably being a bit mean, but NF’s got the No. 1 album in the county and he did by actually selling music, which, in an industry obsessed with streaming, is hard to discredit. His music might not be great, but the hustle is can’t be denied, so cheers!
