Yesterday afternoon Drake shared a bit of sponsored content (spon con, if you will) for rapper Baka Not Nice, who has not only been convicted of assault, he’s gone to jail for it.
Drizzy posted a photo on Instagram teasing an upcoming merchandise line for Baka—who was once his bodyguard—and who he signed to his OVO Sound label earlier this year.
In 2014 Baka Not Nice, born Travis Savoury, was arrested and charged with forcing a woman into prostitution and keeping the profits, a little something called human trafficking. In 2015 he pled guilty to assaulting a woman and was sentenced to six months in jail, which he did not actually serve. (He previously spent ten months in custody, which counted towards his sentencing.)
It doesn’t look like the severity of those charges has harmed his relationship with Drake: Baka has guested on his music dating back to 2013’s “From Time” on Nothing Was The Same to this year’s More Life playlist, contributing vocals to “Free Smoke” and “Gyalchester.” Drake signed Baka in late July when Not Nice’s song “Live Up to My Name” started gaining traction on SoundCloud.
Just yesterday Drake made headlines for calling out some dude who was groping a woman at his concert in Australia. Perhaps he should extend that energy inward to his team, too.
